Starting with a short history. In the mid-80’s, a new coding system for lab tests was launched to automate the exchange of lab analyses between the lab and the Healthcare professional using the EMR Medidoc. These "Medidoc lab codes" were made available to the labs free of charge and gradually a first unofficial standard was developed within this domain. The use of these standardized codes offered a whole range of possibilities in the EMR with as a result many advantages for the Healthcare professionals (e.g. visualizing the evolution of lab results over time and the first early steps in automatic controls).

The Medidoc lab codes remain a well-known concept in Belgium and are still used today by many laboratories, EMRs and Healthcare providers. New codes are regularly created, often at the request of laboratories. Recently, additional codes were provided in the context of the Covid-19 outbreak.

Corilus still wishes to make these codes available to third parties. However, in order to get a better insight into the use of these lab codes, it was decided to only offer the code lists via a website and after registration. This allows us to better estimate where these codes are used and which versions are still in circulation.

We are convinced that this will improve communication between labs, Healthcare providers and software suppliers.
